When different worlds grow into one body

What emerges when matter, technology, living systems, and the human body begin to grow together?

The research began through years of experimentation in COPPER COLORS and was first presented as a new body of work in Luo’s 2026 solo exhibition at A4 Art Museum. From discarded data cables to shells, leaves, ceramics, guided crystals, and the human body, the works bring substances from radically different origins into shared conditions of growth and transformation.

Rather than designing a composite form in advance, the research creates conditions in which heterogeneous forms of matter can interact, reorganise, and become something that none could generate alone.

Nature creates through relationships

The research begins with an observation of nature rather than a specific material. Across radically different scales, similar patterns appear again and again: the branching of leaf veins, the structure of shells, the texture of skin, the branching of rivers, the formation of crystals, and the fractal structures of landscapes and galaxies.

These forms are not assembled according to a complete blueprint.

They emerge through growth, repetition, adaptation, interaction, and self-organisation across time. A simple process can generate extraordinary complexity when it continues to respond to its environment. Nature therefore offers more than forms to imitate. It offers another logic of creation.

Life does not simply assemble finished forms. It cultivates conditions from which new forms can emerge.

 

This observation became a starting point for Composite Being:

What if creation could operate through a similar logic of growth, interaction, and emergence?

When different worlds meet.
What happens when 'unrelated' forms of matter grow together?

The research brings together substances that originate from radically different systems. A discarded data cable carries the residue of a technological network. A shell carries the history of an ocean and an organism. A leaf emerges from a biological system. 

Ceramic carries the transformation of earth through water, fire, and human practice.

Crystals record another scale of material growth. The human body introduces yet another system: biological, sensory, emotional, and conscious.

What relationships can emerge between them? Through accumulation, attachment, growth, transformation, and reorganisation, substances begin to cross the boundaries that normally separate natural from artificial, living from mineral, and human-made from environmental.

The resulting forms are not simply composites. They are records of interaction between different worlds.

They form a new relationship. This led to the concept of the Composite Being: a speculative body in which different forms of matter, technology, and life become part of a larger system while retaining their own histories.

The human body itself is composite. It is formed through biological, mineral, technological, environmental, and cultural systems. Composite Being uses this condition to question the boundary between the natural and the artificial, and to imagine what might exist beyond it.

Growth as negotiation

Extending the cultivation methodology developed through Copper Colors, the research places heterogeneous forms of matter into shared conditions where growth, reaction, attachment, and transformation can occur.

By the 'Out of control within control', Human intention establishes the conditions, but the final form remains open to material behaviour, environment, and time.

As one substance changes, it alters the conditions experienced by another. Guided growth crystals against a surface. A mineral reacts with another substance. A biological form becomes embedded within an artificial structure. A discarded technological object acquires a new material and symbolic relationship.

Growth becomes a negotiation between multiple systems. The resulting forms are not designed in advance. They emerge through interaction.

What kind of world might emerge when different systems evolve together?

The works generated through Composite Being are not predictions of future bodies, technologies, or ecosystems.

 

They function as speculative prototypes. Each work makes a possible relationship between different systems tangible. 

Super Composite Being

Matter from radically different origins—shells from the sea, leaves from the earth, discarded technological cables, minerals, ceramics, and crystals—enters a shared process of transformation. The work asks how heterogeneous substances might participate in the formation of a single evolving body.

 

Mirror of Space-Time

The research expands toward questions of scale, perception, and the relationship between human experience and larger temporal and spatial systems.

Connection
Different materials and systems become linked through processes of transformation, asking how apparently distant entities might enter into a shared material relationship.

Search for the Antidote
The research moves further toward the human condition.
If the systems we create are becoming increasingly complex, what forms of knowledge, relationship, and transformation might allow us to live within them differently? The artworks therefore do not close the research.


They make its questions tangible.

Next Question

If different worlds can become one body, how might those bodies live together?

Composite Being began by asking what might emerge when heterogeneous forms of matter, technology, and living systems grow together.

 

As the research evolved, the question moved beyond the composite body itself. If new forms of being can emerge through interaction, then perhaps the future depends not only on what we create, but on how different systems learn to exist together. 

This leads the research from the scale of matter and being toward the scale of people, knowledge, culture, and collective action. The next question becomes:

How can making together become a model for living and creating together?
